Jordy Ruth

Jordy grew up in Melbourne & first began sailing aboard Melbourne’s Tall Ship ‘The Enerprize’ at a very young age. From this experience Jordy continued within the industry sailing aboard Talls Ships including living aboard ‘the Windeward Bound’ in Tasmania for 2 years.                             Jordy as part of the Tall Ship sailing community subsequently sailed in the ‘International Tall Ship Races’ onboard ‘The Gulden Leeuw’ from Denmark to Norway in 2019.

Working aboard the Windeward Bound Jordy was a leading hand as well as Engineers mate, from this Jordy then gained his MED 3 (Marine Engine Driver 3) License.

In 2020 Jordy joined ‘Harvey’s Boat Co’ in Williamstown for his Timber Shipwright Apprenticeship. Williamstown being drenched in Timber Vessel Tradition & boat budling gave Jordy the skills to specialized in classic timber vessels including Couta Boats, Sailing Yachts, Small Motor Launches & everything in-between. Jordy went on to complete his Timber Shipwright Apprenticeship (Certificate 3 in Marine Craft Construction) with Go Tafe (Goulburn Owens Institute of Tafe) & Harvey’s Boat Co after 3 years & continues to share his passionate and dedication to the art as a highly experienced & competent Shipwright. You will often find Jordy engrossed in perfecting the art of Caulking or mulling over the finer details of a newly layed deck. It is his perfectionism & eye for detail as well as his true passion & dedication to the craft that sets him apart from the rest.

Working on timber vessels from 9am - 5pm 5 days wasn’t enough for Jordy & soon enough Holly & Jordy embarked on a major restoration of ‘Clare’ a Maurice Griffiths 40’ Jarrah Ketch, which both Jordy & Holly fully restored together using all traditional methods in staying true to her 1951 heritage.

Now as a fully qualified shipwright Jordy brings his expertise to Shippies Shipwright Services operating ‘The Cannery Slipway’ in Dunalley Tasmania

Holly Ruth

Holly grew up in Adventure Bay on Bruny Island & began sailing at a very young age. She then joined ‘The Windeward Bound’ When she was 13 & sailed onboard as a Leading Hand for many years.

In Year 12 Holly was granted the ‘International Young Sailor Scholarship’ due to her commitment & achievements within the Tall Ship Sailing Community. This Scholarship took Holly onboard The Tall Ship ‘Gulden Leeuw’ (a 173 foot, 3 Masted Topsail Schooner) joining as crew while also competing her year 12 studies aboard.                                                                                                        During her time aboard ‘The Gulden leeuw’ Holly Sailed over 10,000 nautical miles visiting Barbados, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Bermuda, Portugal, England, Germany, Poland, Russia, Estonia, Denmark & the Netherlands, spending 8 months at sea.

Once returning to Australia Holly re-joined the Windeward Bound as a Leading hand while also completing her Master 5 qualification (Vessel Master less than 24 Metres) at the age of 18.

Holly continued her passion for Timber Boats as Jordy & Holly completed a full restoration of a 1951 40’ Timber Ketch ‘Clare’. Clare was purchased by Holly & Jordy in a state of disrepair on the Hard Stand. Holly & Jordy fully re-ribbed, re-fastened with copper rove & rivets, re-caulked & installed a new engine. While working full time with Holly a Chandlery Manager in Victoria.

Holly has a true passion for Timber Vessel preservation often seen with a Caulking Mallet in Hand & a good share of dirt beneath her fingernails, Holly truly lives & breaths the passion for timber Vessels.

Holly & Jordy met onboard the Windeward Bound & sharing the passion of sailing & timber vessels they soon decided to continued their lives together.

In 2023 Holly & Jordy got married (onboard a timber vessel of course) & now operate ‘The Cannery Slipway’ in Dunalley, Tasmania.

Shippies Shipwright Services run by Holly & Jordy bring youth to the Maritime Industry of Tasmania. They bring their passion, dedication & skills to The Cannery Slipway offering all Shipwright services no mater project scope or Vessel Construction.

They look forward to forging themselves as an integral part of the community & working with Vessel owners to bring dreams to fruition.
